Space Explorers: Mission Infinity Exhibit Design
Science Museum at Kirby Science Discovery Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA
Immersive, story-driven exhibition designed by formula D_ for the Kirby Science Discovery Center. The experience transforms visitors into astronauts-in-training, merging real-world science and gamified learning to inspire curiosity and STEM engagement.
The core vision for the Mission Infinity exhibition was clear from the beginning: to allow visitors to become part of the story.
To bring that vision to life, the museum exhibit design team at formula D_ focused on three key pillars – immersive role play, where every child feels like a real astronaut on an active mission; wow moments built for sharing, making space science tangible, exciting, and personal rather than distant or textbook-driven; and learning that sticks, where fun and education work together to create a lasting, measurable impact long after the visit.
Every museum exhibit design project at formula D_ follows a clear path, from experiential master planning and concept design through to production and final installation.
The process began with translating the client’s vision into a clear design direction. From the earliest sketches, our team mapped out a story-driven visitor journey, defining how each zone would connect, what role the visitor would play, and what moments would create the deepest impact.
With the blueprint in place, the team planned and integrated every design element with purpose. A solar system built from 3D basketballs was introduced to make planetary scale tangible and shareable. Gamified learning checkpoints were woven into the mission flow so that kids could progress through the experience.
Additionally, formula D_’s Experience-to-Action (X2A) platform tracks visitor engagement in real time, measuring activity across different exhibit stations and comparing learning outcomes across touchpoints, giving the museum a clear picture of which facts and ideas visitors are retaining.
Every production element was brought together at once: interior fitout, graphics, animations, electronics, and software design, each element executed with precision to deliver a fully installed immersive space science exhibition at the Kirby Science Discovery Center.
