Design for Urban Belonging
Riyadh Public Realm Strategy
The Riyadh Public Realm Strategy represents a bold new chapter in urban regeneration — one that embraces experiential design to transform overlooked spaces into vibrant, people-centered destinations. Commissioned by Riyadh Holding and developed in collaboration with Vision XS, the project spans 11 strategic sites across the capital, each selected for its potential to enrich daily life and foster community.
At the heart of this initiative is a forward-thinking blend of public benefit and economic sustainability. The master plan introduces a typology-based approach that classifies each site — from high-footfall civic destinations to underutilized community loops — according to context, usage patterns, and development potential. The goal: to create green, inclusive, and financially viable urban experiences that are deeply rooted in local identity
Each site has been carefully analyzed using audience and infrastructure data, SWOT analysis, and urban behavior trends from the Vision XS Live Portal. Recommendations range from shaded walkways, play areas, and performance zones to artisan markets, bike loops, water features, and responsive digital art — always with an emphasis on accessibility, greenery, and safety. The plan also integrates income-generating uses like food and beverage outlets, paid recreational zones, and rotating events to ensure self-sufficiency and long-term impact.
More than just beautification, the strategy prioritizes human connection. By encouraging foot traffic, linking isolated spaces, and enabling spontaneous encounters, the revitalized public realm will increase neighborhood safety, boost local commerce, and foster a stronger sense of belonging among Riyadh’s diverse residents and visitors.
formula D_ contributed to this visionary project by applying behavioral design thinking and experiential strategy to inform spatial activation concepts. Our input focused on the design of emotionally engaging and socially meaningful interventions that promote movement, interaction, and pride of place.
Well-designed urban green spaces offer pristine opportunities to improve the lives of residents and visitors. Beyond aesthetics, experiential design in parks and public spaces strengthens communication between neighbors, encourages healthier lifestyles, and builds resilient communities. This project exemplifies our belief that meaningful, inclusive urban experiences are not luxuries — they are vital infrastructure for the cities of tomorrow.
