  • The Old Granary Visitor Experience

Originally built in 1814 as a home and bakery, the Cape Town building still known as the Granary has been restored and revamped by Formula D interactive, thanks to contributions from both the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust and the City of Cape Town. The 200-year-old neo-classical building, which had been standing vacant and neglected for more than 20 years, is an important cultural heritage site with its rich history layered into its very cement. Despite a history traced with violence, slavery and injustice, the building now has the opportunity to represent the work of a man who has come to symbolize both peace and hope. The 'mini museum' has welcomed several interactive and digital exhibits that showcase the changes in usage of the building as a reflection of the changing times and needs of the growing Cape Colony. Formula D interactive conceptualized, designed and produced the exhibits which brought to life the rich history of the building.
Through a number of innovative interactive exhibits, visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to explore each of these fascinating aspects of the building’s function as it relates to the larger story of South Africa’s history and its people. The exhibits go beyond simply presenting information on panels and artifacts housed, but give rise to investigation through offering opportunities for the public to engage with a “living” digital history. Visitors are able to hear and witness, through specially design audio and audio-visual attractions. The Granary museum forms part of a network of museums and cultural heritage spaces in the Cape Town Central Business District. Within walking distance of the Company Gardens, the Slave Lodge Museum and the District 6 Museum, it would be well advised to set aside a day to visit these spaces and appreciate the significant events and people that make up Cape Town’s rich history.
